Our allotment association (East Finchley) has closed its waiting list until 2010. Demand has mushroomed. There is now a real shortage of plots in this part of London.  What about elsewhere in London?

Here in S W London, the council closed the waiting list for their sites (24 I think) around 9 months ago.  We didn't, so unsurprisingly our waiting list continues to grow being the only site in the borough still taking names.

The council is conducting a review of its allotment provision.  There is no money for new sites they say so they have been looking at restricting plots to borough residents, splitting plots up, preventing people with gardens getting an allotment etc. etc.

Mine's in Birchin Grove, inside the Welsh Harp Wildlife Centre. It's a big site and a beautiful one. Soil is heavy clay though, and even though I swopped plots a couple of years ago, I'm still battling to clear all the bindweed/couch grass/cinquefoil left behind by the previous tenant who didn't believe in weeding. Good soil, though, very fertile.

I've just been allocated my very first allotment plot - on the border of Blackheath/Kidbrooker.  Haven't seen it yet but am very excited!
