This is a bit cheeky, but has anyone got access to a Which survey on which are the best grow bags this year?

Homebase planter at £3.99 then JA Bower at £2.29. We bought 6 JAB from Wyevale & I think they were £5 for 3.

I have never used gro bags but decided to plant some cucumbers, courgettes and butternut squash under my staging this year. The staging is removed later you see. I have simply bought four bags of multipurpose compost for £12 from Wickes and used those. The bags are 75 litres so a good buy. I have only planted one plant in each which is very generous but am interested to see the results compared with those that I usually grow in the raised beds.

Theres two significant differences here;

1. a growbag is usually about 40 L, and made for 1-3 plants, so putting 1 plant in twice as much compost will obviously produce better results, except
2. A growbag has CRF's (controlled release fertiliser) in, usually enough for 6 moths. So although more cramped, the growbag will work better because retail mutlipurpose compost has very little nutrients in it. The compost bag wont perform any better than putting the plants in straight loam, especially if you've fed the beds.

Compost will work just as well as long as you remember to fertilise it.

Was told on the lottie this morning that B&Q growbags are 4 for £5 - he bought 8 and then used his B&Q card and got another £1 off!

No idea. The only professional growers who do that are using hydroponics. Whats the point, the plants arent going to take up all the nutrients you put in overnight. Once a fortnight is pushing it, really.
