I sometimes think we take for granted that we can grow  our own food and even wonder why more people don't always  feel as thrilled as we do when we harvest our own home grown goodies, but I have to admit I squealed with delight today as  I  was picking some salad greens from my wee pot garden on my  north facing balcony, along with the radishes and baby lettuce greens I found  two ready to eat tomatoes from an  ultra early  tomato  claimed to be suitable for colder areas , it is certainly the earliest I have ever known unless under glass and with heat and the taste was surprisingly good for an early .

Today was a real good day.

Lucky you, I'm so jealous. I've been searching for that variety all year, but it is so expensive did yours come from the Rubins brothers? They are breeding some super types.

Closest to fruit I have is a dwarf (not really sure what, possibly Vilma) plant which I had on a windowsill this winter which is just starting to flower.

Jay,it was a swap with a Czech friend from a couple of years ago, he sent me quite a few toms but I can't get a lot of info on them.. this one was in the original packet, just put my hands on it..can't read much but this one was called Polyyagnyk Krasnet, that is not exact as some of the letters are funny, anyway  my friend said it means Polar Blush. It is pink with deeper  pink streaks  on it. I wasn't sure it would be ripe  enough but it was OK.

It is a dwarf plant about 18-20 inches.

I do have extra seeds if you fancy a few.

Oh, I think it may be a different variety or renamed perhaps? I'm sure the one I was looking for was Dubna something, maybe someone else knows?

Yes I'd love some seeds, size sounds ideal and pretty too. Early tomatoes here we come  ;D. Do you think there is enough time to get a small crop this year if I sow quite soon? I should have spare seeds then if anyone else wants to try.

When should I sow for next years earlies?

Hi Jeannine - lucky you to have tomatoes already! Would I be too cheeky asking for a few seeds? Maybe some saved ones from this years produce? Then I could grow some really early ones next year.

manicscousers

we picked some small leaves from the salad box, some radish leaves to thin them out, red mustard and mibuna greens (thank you, jeannine, still using your seeds)..small overwintered purplette onions and some carrot thinnings, also over winter, haven't got any toms yet though....lovely fresh salad  ;D

Jeannine

OH dear, I really  have egg on my face with this one. I felt sure you would all come back at me with your April fools day jokes and the post would turn funny.. that's life I guess.

Oh no ..we do not fool around ;D..this is serious business..
In our lottie there is always selected group of members who year after year compete with earliest possible crop..not official competition...just so that they can drop a line during conversation that they have "such and such all ready".. ::)
some years some of them are already clearing tomato plants off for other crops when most of us is only just starting to get first ones on plate ::) ::)
..the weather at the moment is best april fools joke... ::) ::)

Jeannine

Well I agree, we always managed our first tomato (tumblers by the way in a heated greenhouse)tiny spuds , salsds and asparagus  to coincide with Mayday, but this was a whole month earlier

You have to look really close, it is at the bottom pointing down, still has the remains of a flower on it.

Brilliant Jeannine - when did you sow them for heaven's sake?? I am soooo jealous! I didn't realise that BC was so much warmer than Alberta. My sister had snow again only a couple of days ago in Calgary.
