Good weather how long would you wait?

We've had some blindingly good weather over here in my part of Norfolk, not had frost for 2 weeks temperatures of 8-12C  and the sun's been shining every day apart from 1/2 days in said fortnight.

question is, would you tempt it and plant out? or would you distrust the weather?


I've got a few things which are ready to go out but being a newbie to this (only growing in my safe enclosed garden last year) i'm not sure how long to wait if at all.

so the question is, how many days of good lovely weather would trust before planting out?

One year we had good weather here in spring, then a frost at the beginning of June which killed all my runner beans. :'(
So I don't plant any tender stuff out till the second week of June.  They still catch up and I'd rather not risk it.

check your night-time temperatures,its been dipping below freezing at about 3 - 4 o'clock in the morning. (have you got a 'max - min' thermometer in the garden?)

Mine had been going below zero quite a lot this week, and I'm in the south.

Dont chance it yet, waaaay too early, i know it is hard to hold off, but you will be gutted if you plant out and lose the lot, i never put out any of my tender stuff until may and even then some of the old timers think that i am taking a chance as you can still get frost in May.

I agree with lottiedolly - way way too early to plant out any tender stuff.

Nothing more upsetting that it being your fault for killing the plant!

We probably will still get frosts for quite a while yet - only South west cornwall would I be tempted to try!

Well it does depend on what you have to go out.
Broad beans, Peas (early) etc  can go out but anything tender I'd leave...

On Countryfile yesterday, they said that there would be frost overnight on Monday/Tuesday.

Don't even think about anything tender. Tough stuff - broad beans, leeks, seed potatoes, etc, can go in, but it'll just sit till the soil warms up to the point where it's going to grow. I'm putting my potatoes in to get them out of the way, but while I'm about to start planting seeds, it's strictly under cover. No point putting a seed in the open ground if it can't grow straight off.

Not this morning but the one before I noticed frost on the inside of the GH glass when I opened it up..... can't remember the last time the cold clung on like this.... I only got round to putting in a few earlies (Swift and Rocket) in pots in the GH this morning, and that was more in desperation..... I've got a load of onion, leek, cabbage etc seedlings coming through the GH now (and blocking it up) but until I get to dig over the plot they can't go out, and I've lost the previous weekends to family stuff and gigs.... need to get the rotavator fired up cos I'#ve got no chance of doing it by hand now.....
