While reading about peas on another site I decided to look up some of these old and interesting sounding varieties. The site below is part of what I found and is fascinating.

I've got some of the Alderman/Telephone, one fo the Italian seedhouses sells them as "Telefono"....

Alaska gave rise to all the overwintering peas we have these days, but I doubt one in ten of the others is still in cultivation even in the heirloom houses...

I have purple podded if you would like some, and if I can find where I put them some telefono.  I also have snow peas.

Any idea which purple-podded? There are a lot of varieties, and many of them either never had 'proper' names or lost them. They were field peas which were dried and used for things like pea soup, mushy peas and pease pudding. I could spare a few Robinson's Purple Podded (ex Robinson's seeds, hence the name), Alderman, or Magnum Bonum, which is another tall green podded variety. I like it better than Alderman. I'll be trying a lot more this year, I've gone a bit overboard.

I have some of the original HSL Purple Podded and Lancashire Lad, which is similar...  :)

My 'normal' peas 'Onward' are growing nicely too.

Looks like my first year growing stuff is going to be colourful  ;D especially when you add in the Painted Mountain corn.   :P

I know what you mean about willpower, Mortality, I have none in some areas..I've just taken delivery of some Victorian Colossal climbing pea plants from victoriana nurseries, reputed to grow to 8' plus..been grown since the 1890's, just couldn't resist  ;D

I wonder what that is? It's described as 'Allderman', but it's too tall for Alderman. I've got a few seeds of Colossus, which might or might not be the same thing. We'll have to compare notes.

Many of my Heritage peas... Magnum Bonum, Purple Podded and so on exceed 8' in a good season...   ;D

What a super posting, I have wanted tall growing peas for ages and only ever knew about 1, I was thinking of getting Mr Big over here, I have never heard of that one before but of course it is a newer one, yours sound very exciting, I am off to look, do hope they will post over here. I'm trying some tall peas this year as well-purple podded and golden podded- as these grow to 6-8 feet  I undestand I need to space the rows 6-8 feet.I will also be growing a runner bean double row in the same area-do I need to space the same distance between the beans and the peas or can they be closer? Just thought I'd ask in this thread-hop you don't mind

If you're growing them in rows you probably do, or they'll shade each other. I grow them all up wigwams and put them a couple of feet apart. It works.

Alderman Peas

I have Alderman but on the box it gives the sowing period Oct - Feb. Is it too late to start these in an unheated greenhouse for this year?

Not at all; I wouldn't risk putting a wrinkly pea in over winter! I haven't planted mine yet; I wait for it to warm up, then plant them. If you plant wrinkly peas in cold soil, they rot.

This year I grow Early Alaskan, Alderman, Lincoln, Serpette Guilloteau, Mammoth Melting Sugar Snow, Half Pint and good old sugar snap.
I'll hope this year is better one as last year sparrows were in need of salad suppliers.. ::)..no amount of mesh, covering,cd's ..name it, could not keep them away..must been really tasty...oh well..they left other things well and truly alone... ;D
