Does anyone know of a maincrop which only really produces really large tubers? Don't mind if it doesn't make lots of them, I'm just looking for a variety to grow for bakers. Desiree did OK for me last year but it produced a lot of smaller spuds as well, I'd have been happier with fewer larger spuds..... I've got a visit to a local potato event lined up so will be able to have a prod around, if I have  alist I can always get a few tubers of each....

Maxine as a late and Kestrel as a 2nd early throw out some big tubers subject to the season.

You should have a look for Pentland Crown. Cut the rose eyes out from the top of the potato and you will get some monsters.

I will do a video on youtube soon on how to prepare potatoes for chitting and show you what I do.

Thanks tattieman... I know what I'm doing with spuds in general, but the eye scrubbing thing is something I've only read about so a video would be welcome, indeed any hints and tips are.... I might not need them or care about them (wierdly for someone that loves PFA I eat almost no new potatoes except as potato salad, go figure :D), but I'm sure that lots of others will.... It might be an idea to start a thread for the vid links though, otherwise they'll get buried in some obscure size-queen thread...
[benny hill in the italian job] I likes 'em big....[/benny hill....]

You must cut the eye out otherwise they will still produce sprouts.
I put them all on youtube and people love them. All done on a simple hand held Kodak camera. ;D

Don't take life so seriously, it's not permanent.

I agree with Chris, is it possible you could put a link to your youtube videos in a new thread, being of a maturer age, i am not too good with the you tube thingys but can handle links to the videos that interest me  :)

just had a look at the database - has just about everything except tuber size.........

useful if growing new varieties and you want to know about likely susceptability to blight, scab etc.

Yes you are right, however, you can search for "Baker" varieties.

Thanks

I grew 'Winston' last year , officially its an early, but I got very large potatoes with no slug damage at all.
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

The collection of eyes, usually at one end...  take these out and you get fewer shoots and theoretically larger tubers as a result...

Tattieman

CornyKev I have subtitles on some of the videos for you ;D
The rose eye is the end of the potato that normally has a cluster of eyes very close together and you should remove those ones.
Lottiedolly I have a link to my videos as my signature for you.

I remember one old gardener telling me if you want big spuds plant the tattie with the eyelets downwards
When you wake up on a morning say "good morning world" and be grateful
