Thanks Hugh and Ozzy, I did think I may have fertility problems (well the plot rather than me!) - I've started collecting lots of nice things to make compost - esp seaweed which is supposed to be brilliant, prunings/grass from my own garden (and my neighbours).  Although my soil must have some fertility - it was nicely covered in huge amounts of marestail etc., I don't think it will grow great veg without a bit of help, and may well be a dust bowl in another dry summer.  Off to the stables for more manure methinks!

Don`t worry about the mares tail. Merv`s found the cure.  Now we`re all waiting to see whether it works.

You`re quite right about the brassicas though - they won`t do much good on soft soil - cabbages and caulies stay small(ish) and brussels have very loose sprouts.

Too right on this Hugh; I have been out clearing the patch today and the sprouts that were planted in firm soil and caned were tight and large, the ones on the plants that had fallen over and subsequently been rocked in high winds were loose and huge and the kind you would avoid putting in your basket at the green grocers! ;D

Nope, I'm not convinced.  Even so, wouldn't be keen on giving up the ground for 10-12 weeks.
