When to split mint

I have a brilliant mint plant in a large pot at home and want to split it to start some off on the plot... is there a best time of year to do it or can I do it now... I don't want to kill it off?

kill mint? is that even possible ;)

i would think it would do just fine if you split it now just be sure to not let it dry out, which will help it to restablish it's self properly before the dormant months of winter.

It sure is... I managed it by not watering one pot of it... mind, it wasn't a nice variety - the leaves were sticky and always covered in dead insects so I don't miss it.

It won't dry out... it's going on the plot near the communal tap (very handy - it's at the edge of my plot) which drips every time it's used.

we managed to kill mint, too..it was overtaken by a periwinkle  ;D
just watch it doesn't run amok, it's a vandal and will run everywhere, we have it in a big container  ;D

Wow... now there's a coincidence... I have a clump of periwinkle cuttings in a pot that I was going to put nearby... will make sure they're not as close as first planned - thanks for that!

The containing it won't be a problem... I've got a brick greenhouse base and footings (no greenhouse - just left by the previous plot holder) with a small space at the back between that and the plot divide so it couldn't spread anywhere other than along that bit.

I'm trying out lots of different mints at the moment, peppermint, applemint, just bought orange mint and I've seen chocolate mint  :o ;D

yorkshire lavender farm, I decided on the orange one, the choc one wouldn't help my diet, I'd be craving it all the time  ;D
it was wold's way lavender and herb farm, just had a look, they don't do plants by post  :(
still, I've not had chocolate since the choc challenge on here, still ain't lost any weight though  ;D

I'm off to a nursery this week so will have to keep my eye out.

apple mint is my favourite mint of all, its very rampant( I keep giving loads away ;D)

I also have chocolate mint which is a very slow grower unfortunately, I would like more of it :P / shades x

ohhh, no, I've just found it on e bay..off to look for a space  ;D

you can just snip off a bit and stand it in water for a while until it develops roots then pot it up.

I keep mine in big pots and frequently take cuttings this way for other people who want some with the landhealthwarning to keep it in a pot.

I can let you have some chocolate mint Shades. We dug it up at the begining of the year but it has come up again. Pm me if you want it

Why split it just cut some off stand it water it will root then plant it.
