Look on the bright side though, if you worked on the underground you'd get a few strike days a year... or whenever England play a match.

Good luck to you & your fellow workers - I'd want a bit more than 2% pay rise for having tramps spit in my face! Well done for standing up to the bullies!

I have just been voted in as secretary of my branch of UCU - the union for Universtiy and College Lecturers - We are on notice of redundancy in our department and there is a lot to do.  A colleauge is also facing a disciplinary for reporting 2 Lecturers for discriminating against one of our students who did work experience with them - they said she didn't follow procedure because she didn't challenge them there and then even though she was intimidated by them - the union does a lot for members - its not all about striking and conflict,  just wish more people felt able to be part of the union movement - together we are stronger!

Mr Smith

I have always been in a union and supported reasonable legal action but whatever increase you put in for someone will be paying for it along the line like the people of  Nottinghamshire that don't live on the tram routes, ;)

I'm a Unite shop steward.  If it wasn't for the trade union movement employers would still be getting away with murder.  The nice thing about a strong union is that you don't need it.

Never been in a union and never needed to be.  Admittidly one reason why I dont need to be is the past work done to gain workers rights so I do owe an historic debt to those that fought for those rights.
I just cant see the benefit for me to be in a union now.

Employers are still getiing away with murder if they can, it is only the H&S act which has brought employers into line and I'm the last person to say that I like anything out of Brussels, I could never imagine some of the regulations which are in place through the H&S act to protect employees in the work place ever being implemented on the back of the unions say-so employers would have just stuck two fingers up to them,    ]

I have worked in a wide variety of places from merchant banks to Charities and schools and have never had a problem with an employer in over 20 years of work.  A lot of employers actually care about their employees because after all they are generating profits for them.  I know there are bad employers out there but not all employers are exploiting the workforce.  Maybe I have just been fortunate but then again if I dislike the company, I leave it.

I am also a Unite shop steward and some of the things managers try to get away with you wouldn't believe, some of the new managers at our place really can't believe they have to follow procedes and H&S regs as they come from backgrounds where they do as they please and don't care who they tread on. We've never striked though, we always find an alterative.  ;D ;D ;D
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

I am NUT rep at our place.  Adults in schools are vulnerable from false allegations so a union is a must for education employees.

PS I am also appointed person for child protection so I know how vunerable they are from unsavoury people too.

I work at a school (independent) now and we dont have any union at all for NTS - the subject has never arisen to be honest!  I am not a teacher but I do understand the issues - (I hope) - I expect the teachers are all NUT but it has never come up in conversation in ten years.

Support staff in education can join unison and you don't have to have a rep in your work place to join - I agree with red clanger, all staff in education are vulnerable especially if they work with children or those with a learning difficulty or disability.  As a lecturer I am potentially personally liable should anything happen to one of my students - Being in the union is a bit of an insurance policy in a way. Unions offer a wide range of support including legal advice and respresentation which can be very costly as well as numerous other benefits, all I say is have a think about it, it only takes one seemingly small incident such as for my colleague I mentioned earlier.......

Well it looks like its still on. NET have told us we must take a 0.6% pay cut or  a pay freeze and lose the first 3 days of our sick pay lose our paid breaks or have a longer working week. most of tramcrew would have accepted a pay freeze in these unprecedented times for the economy, but to put the boot in with the sick pay paid breaks and a longer working week, i don't think so. >:(

tonybloke

it sounds as if the management are really sticking the boot in!!
are the management getting offered the same deal?
You couldn't make it up!
