Has anyone dared?

I have just ordered £60.00 more seeds for next year and I doubt if Ive finished buying yet but it got me to thinking, has anyone dared to add up how just how much their seed collection is worth? IE how much all the seeds they own have cost?

I have a little theory that if we are generally optimists then we spend more in hope of perfect/better/bigger/more/diverse/tastier/disease resistant crops next year.  ;D :-\ ;)

At least all my Toms, French Beans and Peas are "saved" but now the local Wyevale has shut I don't know where to get my main fix this year.  ::)

Personally I am cured of seed addiction. I know this because I recently THREW AWAY a lot of packets. Mostly things that were failing to germinate or several bought about 4 years ago in a Wyevale give 'em away sale. Didn't swap them so that I was not tempted by more seeds  ;D

But what's this about next year? Haven't finished with this year yet. In June I only bought 10 packets in total, one of which has been planted (yard long beans) and there are definite plans for at least 2 or 3 others in the next couple of weeks. Incidentally I blame saddad for the beans - fancy putting a link to www.jungleseeds.co.uk in a post. Irresistible!

I m off to Tatton in three weeks time and there is generally a stall there that sells cheap seeds,then if I don't fill my needs I will look at the T&M offer.

We have a seed order once a year through our allotment association. Seeds / onion sets etc come from Kings and are reasonably priced.

The allotment association also makes some money through commission on the total purchase.

The seeds I would like from T&M are not on half price offer, and there's the postage to think about.  BUT ... I'm saving up for Wyvale 50p/packet offers in September ... ... ours hasn't closed down ...  8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I have already ordered from 3 different suppliers in the past 3 weeks and now I am going to have to get more from jungle seeds = great site.  All my OH keeps saying in a bemused way is 'I thought the idea of an allotment was to save money??'. Poor deluded man.

Samehere,no point paying full price now when you can get them reduced at the end of the season. I don't worry toomuch about how much I spend on seeds, it's compost that gets me- especially when the plants don't make it!

It not what you spend but what you can reap back that is the answer.
I spend lots on seeds and plants, but the benefits outway the costs every time.
Also the mass production loses the taste from a lot of the produce today.
If I can offer my family taste and freshness over the cost of going shopping for these items then they will choose the former rather than the later every time.
Grow to eat not the other way round.

Have not managed this yeat but did throw away some old empty packets, though regreted it later when I could not remember which varities I did not like.

I am not convinced that growing your own is cheaper, but it certainly tastes better.  I  have discovered various delights golden beetroot, choggia beetroot eaten raw, yellow courgettes, pale green courgettes, cousa courgettes ......

I have still got seed that goes back twenty years and this still comes good.
All I do is keep it in paper envelopes and seal it in a large ice cream tub.
This is then put in a dark place so as the writing doesn't fade.
The only seed to not show itself is the Hostas as they do not keep to well.
My mother gave me seed to grow back in 1991 and that too has grown into nice buzy lizzies. Mauve ones.
I also got some tomato seeds from my uncle in Devon which he had been growing and saving the seed since the mid 1940s so there can be savings made in what you grow and what you can keep for years to come.
We have had a bed of nasturtiums which we and the wildlife feed from and that seed is from when the plants were first grown in somerset some thirtyfive years ago when my dad said its good for you.
I say have a go with any seed to make sure you label it well and if you like it then let some go to seed and keep it for years to come.
Maybe then we can all help the seed banks to keep the old varieties and even produce some new ones too.
