AKA Egyptian walking onions. I've got loads if anyone wants some. They're probably best grown on in pots for the first year, and reach full size (waist high) in the third season.

PM me your address. Last winter I had bulbils lying about, which started growing happily in the spring. On the other hand, bulbils which are actually planted in the open ground have been disappearing. I suspedt it's the winter wet, but I'm advisinf everyone to grow them in pots for a year just in case. I did get away with it the first year I had them, but not since. Keep them cool and dry, and they'll be fine.

Wish you had advised me to grow them in pots last year Robert.  I wondered where they had got to, thought the pigeons had had them.  Do you actually use the parent plant or leave it year in year out?

Disclaimer: I got my Caatawissa from ebay earlier this spring....

Don't expect them to do the walking onion trick the first year.... I've got seven and only one has done it this year....  that said it has bulbils on bulbils on bulbils with another layer coming...... The others are now massive bulbs, ATM neaarly as big as the biggest of the Kelsaaes planted next to them.... that said some oif the Kelsaes are now starting to look like big show onions so I'm expecting them to romp awqay now....

I'm sorry, I hadn't thought of it a year ago. Do you need more? I used a mixture of parent bulbs and top sets last year, from now on it's just going to be the parent bulbs.

I pulled them out about this time and left them to die back, then replanted them. They were fine. You can plant everything, though after the last couple of winters I'd do bulbils in pots to be onthe safe side.
