How can you eat redcurrants? Can you wash them and eat them 'raw' like strawberries?

How long will they store in the fridge after being picked fresh?

I often graze on a strig or two without washing them... :-X
As our lottie is over the garden fence we don't tend to fridge them, just go for some fresh...  :)

Redcurrant jelly.Always my favourite.

I zap them in the microwave with a little apple juice and then serve with chicken. 

I'm with you Saddad I also like to graze.  Berries are supposed to be the perfect breakfast.

Summer pudding.
Smoothies.

Another thread on here had great advice to add them strawberry jam to help it set.

I have some sitting in some brandy (or rum) with sugar added.....
I just eat them as I pick (one for the bowl, 2 for me!)

On the request of OH my stepdaughter made a redcurrant pie at the weekend ....it was delish!!

It's a double crust pie - 12oz shortcrust pastry in a deep pie tin.

Filling was 1lb redcurrants mixed with 3oz sugar and 2 level tbsps cornflour.  No pre-cooking, just mix it together and put in the middle of the pie  as you make it.

Mmmmmm ... I'm dreaming of it again!  Sadly that was my first years picking of redcurrants so no more left.  Roll on next year  ;D ;D

Pippy was that 2 level tablespoons of cornflour? Seems a lot or maybe I'm wrong. ;D

It does sound a lot - I will have to check with step daughter as to what measure she used!  I have two tablespoons, one I inherited from my mother, an old fashioned imperial silvered one (probably about 50 years old), and one a plastic measuring spoon that came with my bread maker and which always looks much smaller to me!   If I was doing it I would probably guess it, but then I have used cornflour for various sauces for years.

Saddad - how many redcurrant bushes do you have?  I have three, but I only put them in the winter before last and this is the first year they have cropped.  They were Marshalls Rovada (I think?) and when mature they are supposed to give huge crops.  I expect next year I will have a glut but I am already excitedly planning for that!

PS - the colour of the pie was gorgeous!

We have four "Stanza" that have been in about 15 years... we don't net them and let the pigeons eat as many as they can...  ;D

Thanks for this - I have never added cornflour to currants before with the result they are always too runny in a pie. But using your mix  I did a low fat version at the weekend. Instead of double crust of pastry - I mixed the fruit as above and then scrunched up 5 sheets of filo pastry, brushed this with a little melted butter. And then when cooked dusted with icing sugar and served with custard (made with skimmed milk). Even my OH who apparently doesn't like fruit pies liked it. Thanks again  ;D

Your very welcome Suzanne - I thought it was one of those absurdly simply things that seem suddenly obvious too! :)

By the way - we don't have pies very often - about 2 or 3 times a year so next year if we have a lot of redcurrants I will try your healthier version! :D
