I guess your soil must have been contaminated from a previous crop but I am very surprised that it has manifested itself so early in the season.

What size is the bulb?

Any chance of a picture or two?

the odd thing is, I have one block of Jap onions which are showing all the signs of white rot and come straight out the ground ,then I have a block of spinach and then another block of Jap onions and they haven't got white rot!! but are all in the same bed, its as if the spinach has stopped the second block of onions getting the rot, but that's impossible isn't it ?.

the bulbs are small/ medium, no photos at the mo, but you are right its early for white rot/ shades x

Do you already have it in the soil?  Or was it imported with the sets?  I have some radar in from the shed on your site :o

I have read that the sulphurs leached into the soil from brassicas can slow the progress of white rot.  Don't know about beets.  I seem to have a little bit every year on my plot but it only ever effects the odd bulb.  I always put my onions/garlic where I had long standing brassicas (sprouts or PSB) the previous year.

Although it might not work since it's 'only a soap', have you thought of trying Armillatox? Check out the international site for it www.armillatox.com

Armillatox is not "soap" - it's only allowed to be sold in the EEC as a "cleaning agent". It works really well against white rot but MUST be applied 3 weeks prior to planting at 1:100 dilution 1 gallon per metre square

I have a trial of Armillatox against whiterot ongoing at the moment. Half the alliums bed is treated and half not, so it will be interesting to see if there are any differences at the end of this season.

 :) thanks for your replies, I've pulled up the onions one side of the spinach, it wasn't hard they had really rotted,

the onions the otherside of the spinach are fantastic, so the spinach has protected them some how :-\/ shades x
