dry soil

the plot i've got seems to have incredibly dry soil, if there hasn't been any rain for a few days the top is almost like a desert it's more like dust than soil, whats the best way to try and get some moisture in to it i was thinking of getting a couple of loads of muck and dig it in.

if you going to get a couple of loads, dig in one load, and spread the other one on the surface!
You couldn't make it up!

Personally I'd stick an inch or two of manure on the top.  A good bit of mulch will retain moisture and protect bare ground from weeds as well as improving the nutrients of the soil.

Don't know where you are staris, but on the coast my soil dries out so quickly from the wind. And I think tonyblokes reponse makes most sense - it's roughly what I'm doing to stop the drying

great thx, i'll order a couple of load of manure i can get it delivered for £20.00 a load  ;D
