Hmm, start with half hardy's and next you'll be trying bananas! Heard it all before (including myself!).
Seriously, place the ridge in the direction that you took the photo. I don't know how early you will want to start propagating your plants but even in February (which, meteorlogically, is still winter) your wallet could appreciate any early temperature lift you can achieve. Given how prominent the shadow of the house is in this photo, even in June, just how much direct sunshine will you get in December?
Tim- eek! Aren't their laws in the U.K. now about shading from neighbours plants? Sorry, I know there are, can they not be applied in your situation?

Sadly, in a village community, one has to live with 'them'. I'm sure 'they' could have our grandchildren put away!! = Tim

John, In an ideal world i would chose the perfect site, good light in winter, cool in summer, with access to water and electricity. Sadly this isnt an ideal world, there simply isnt anywhere else suitable . So I will have to try and get the most out of what is available.  That said the light in winter on that site is not too bad, probably best early morning and  from mid afternoon onwards. The picture shown was in fact taken at 11.00am on the 7th June.

I usualy start growing stuff from seed around late february (up to now in a windowsill heated propagator), which seems early enough, for things which dont need too much heat to germinate and grow.
