Pogo Stick Potatoe Planter

I have been trying to find a picture. I cant. So I will have to try to describe it.

Looks like a pogo stick made from a 3" stake. The Foot rest is 7" from the point.

I am thinking about using this to plant my spuds. I got the idea from an Andi Clevely book.

When I did a test hole the sides of the hole looked quite compressed and it was about 6" deep. It was a bit wet so the sides did look shiny.

Can you guys see any issues with this way of doing things ? I do of course intend to allow for earthing up when required.

I think my Grandad uses what used to be the handle of a fork after the actual fork fell off  :-\

I use a fence post pointed at both ends.One end has a 10' bolt thro it 18' from the end for planting mains and the other ends a bolt thro it 12' from the other end for earlies..walk along the line. In goes the post by standing on the bolt ( like a pogo stick) up to the bolt depth, it makes a neat hole, in goes the tuber. earth up with an adzada..happy days.

Sense versus bad back syndrome erm ..... This wouldn't be a current priority for me either but, whatever floats yer boat. I'd certainly use one if I was given it. Maybe I'll revise my priorities after I've planted all the d**n spuds Iv'e planned to this year. Bloody self-sufficiency.  ::) :)

The problem with these is that in most soils the dibber will leave an air pocket under the spud. This may or may not be a problem but I prefer using a spade.

I still have my grandfather's potato planter in original condition but I never use it.
(I will resist the comment "100 years old, only 2 new handles and 3 new points and as good as the day it was made".)
