I've had enough of it too now Jim... went down the lottie yesterday & all my psb's squashed under a layer of netting and frozen snow. We've had our fun, it was very pretty but now it's time to warm up!

"But we need a cold snap to kill the bugs" we always hear, especially when the winter is mild.  Well, we've had the cold weather; what I'd like to know is: what bugs will be killed off - if we have the same bugs we have every year when it's mild will people then say "well, it wasn't cold enough/cold enough for long enough"?

One big con

Just watched Countryfile, one of the reasons for the explosion in the rat population on farms has been the succession of mild winters.  They reckon this one will get 'em!

asbean

Yeah, one cold snap and they come and move into my loft  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

How are they getting into your loft?
You couldn't make it up!

It should also wipe out some of these cold bugs as well.

How are they getting into your loft?

They (she) climb(s) up the walls and squeeze(s) in through any tiny gap they can find. And come through from next door (semi-detached rat run) who also have rats.

She had four babies which we got rid of, used the petals of next door's artificial flowers to make the nest.

They don't like noise or light, so have had the light and radio on in the loft and had no scratching since. We also covered the floor near where they congregate with white pepper and cayenne pepper, but that doesn't seem to affect them.  They won't go for the humane trap, my nephew says he has an inhumane one which I suspect is a shotgun, which I think is a bit OTT in the loft.  Don't want to use poison because (1) we have cats and (2) I don't want rotting corpses.

I go up there from time to time and bang on the rafters just to let them know I'm there, unfortunately we have a lot of insulation and they are underneath it.

We'll get rid eventually, then we can block up all entry points.

I am pleased it is so cold for so long.  One of the "bugs" I will be pleased to see less of is wasps, and after a cold winter I find I am not bothered with them.  if we have a mild winter with very few frosts, the summer and especially autumn is "hell"

There are various pests coming into england (specifically the southern counties) from abroad which have been surviving our winters, hopefully this cold weather will put pay to them...

Asbean, I can totally sympathise... In my old house I had a rat in the loft and it was going between all the terrace... my neighbour *finally* managed to catch it in a trap, (it was the size of a terrier...) but wouldn't let her brother shoot it... idiot... so they released the d**n thing a few miles away.  i heard afterwards and told them they have a homing instinct... and it would be back... yep, it came back, and wouldn't be caught a 2nd time...   I got rid of it my moving house!!!!!! (Oh and I found it didn't like to stay in my loft long after I plugged in one of those ultrasonic rat things which work through the house electric cables... after the first night, my neighbour mentioned that she heard the rat going mad for a couple of nights... I kept quiet about what I had fitted ;-) )

For me, this weather is how winters should be, and why I am pleased I now live "oop north..."  yes, I need to dig my new garden, yes a few things need to be planted, but I can wait another month if necessary.  The amount of snow some areas are seeing is more than they have had for a while, i think we should enjoy it.  I love autumn, winter and spring for the weather they bring...

Ironic really... I went to Oz in 2003 and whilst there UK had the hottest ever temperatures...(it was hotter than where I was in Oz!)  I went to the Antarctic this winter... and the UK is now having some of the coldest temperatures!!!!! (yep it was colder in North yorkshire before I left than where i was on the Antarctic peninsula) ...the only two times I have had a holiday abroad... ironic hey?!

if you want to think this is beneficial; your garlic will be loving the cold spell, it needs a cold spell to initiate the bulbs to split and grow large... and for those who dislike wasps as much as I do, you'll see far less this summer  ;D

there was a thread recently on the pest and diseases sketch, regarding the best type of traps, (non - humane, but efficient) if they used in a loft, or other confined space they ain't gonna catch cats or kids!! the best bait is peanut butter btw, smells lovely, sticks to trap!! ;)

started off with the weather..now its rats in attics?
dont see the connection!!!!

It's cold outside .... it's warm inside.  If you were a rat, which would you choose???????
