My son loves cucumbers would be quite happy eating them like apples  :D So i thought i could get him involved by growing some in the garden in grow bags? Has anyone tried this? I have read you can put 3 plants per bag and train them like tomatoes?

Any advice and tips would be great  ;D also what type should i buy?  I had a pack brought for me from wilkos but they can only be grown in a cold frame or green house and seeing as i only have a small plastic one i dont think i could use them. So if anyone wants them just let me know.

Thanks lucy

have a look at the plants of distinction catalogue, they have 'lunchbox' cucumbers, not sure of prices but they have a great variety  :)
found it, cucumber bushy..20 seeds, 1.40, ideal for containers and patios, early and compact, hope this helps

Outdoors, you won't need Grow Bags - unless you have no soil. No need to train like Toms - they grow on the flat. But you can use netting etc. A bit too fiddly for me.

Many types - like Burpee - but we grew Dobies Green Fingers last year with success - lots of bite sized fruit.

I like the white ones like Crystal Apple (Lemon), White wonder etc... but check with the boy first as some find such "oddities" off putting. They will grow outside but only really been successful under glass here.

Wow thanks didnt even realize you could get small cucumbers only ever seen the long ones. Will definatly be trying some, harry will love having a small cucumber in his lunch box.

Cricky where have i been  :o white cucumbers i'm being amazed every day just like when i saw yellow raspberries!!!! Which i now have in my garden.

Will have to go and find some pic's to show him that will amaze him too.

Thanks again

Off seed shopping  ;D

i usually grow burpless tasty green which is pretty easy to grow and does well outside depending on what sort of summer you get weather wise. i grow them up wigwams with french beans. yummy.

I am astounded by the different varieties of cucumbers that you can grow truly amazing. Little one was very impressed by the Crystal apple variety couldn't stop giggling  ;D

Grew my own for the first time last year.

Could not believe how good they tasted, compared to shop ones. :)

I've grown burless tasty green up wigwams as well - I found it kept slugs off them.

They were small and tasty and not watery like the big varieties you find in most shops. I have 3 or 4 plants, and get so many cucumbers over the summer that I have to give some away.

I'm trying white ones this year - bianco di lungo. Don't know what they'll be like!
