I have a bit of tarmac and gravel at the front of the house; a bit of paving outside the lean-to; and a paved area in the middle of the garden that I intend to keep, for sitting, barbecuing, etc. I thought the easiest way to keep all this weeded might be a flame gun / weed wand that will burn the weeds up. (I don't want to use chemicals.) I used to do a lot of weeding for a client on a brick-paved front garden, and it was soooooo time-consuming by hand.

Anyone have experience of these devices and can advise, encourage, discourage, etc? :)

I have a sheen x300 flamegun but it is quite large and would not recommend it being used on tarmac or the like as it runs on paraffin and leaves black soot marks on solid surfaces that are quite hard to remove as i found out :-[
you may be a king or a little street sweeper but sooner or later you dance with de reaper.

Ooh yeh - thanks Tim! :D

I see someone mentioned using boiling water - now why didn't I think of that? I reckon that will do me for now. I think the Sheen x300 flame gun is waaaaay beyond what I need, as it's only for these small areas of paving. I just got bored of prying dandelions out of brickwork with a trowel on that last job!  I see that Lidl did weed wands at one point. I think I'll put out a request on Freecycle - somebody might have one they bought in a fit of enthusiasm and don't ever use... Un-needed Gadget Syndrome. :)

I use a ordinary blowlamp much cheaper to run

I've got a gas canister one, its very light and easy to use. Him in doors bought it in Wyvale a couple of years ago for me to use.(he hate gardening buts great at house work) Best used as the weeds appear. Will do bigger weeds but takes a while. Great for starting bonfires. Hope this helps.
