Reading, Berkshire - know any gardening groups?

Hi all, this is my first post!
I'm moving to Reading at the beginning of November, and at our new place we have a long, empty lawn. I plan to dig a wide border and get some veg in straight away. As it's too late for seed, I may go for a deal like this one
http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/vegetables/winter-small-vegetable-garden/classid.2000011035/
and hey presto, a vegetable garden from scratch.

Other than initial outlay on veg plants, I aim to spend as close to zero as possible; I'm already collecting perennial and herb cuttings and seeds at every opportunity. Does anyone know of any gardening groups in or around Reading? Or any really good cheap place for plants? I'd be grateful for any tips. We don't know anyone there, and don't know too much about the area - starting from scratch in all senses!

cheers,
Helen

hello to HHH - and welcome to the group. I live just outside of Reading (3/4 miles) and wonder if you mean you're going to be right in Reading itself or in some nearby small town. Almost all of the surrounding area places will have Horticultural groups which you could join and here is one website that might be of interest to you

a few weeks ago I was at their Annual show and it's a very busy active group. I belong to another Horticultural society (somewhat smaller) which is based in a different but not so far away area of Reading too.

Good luck ;)

Thanks all for the greetings! Sorry, didn't notice I'd had replies to this - hadn't got the hang of how to find my own posts! :-)

Thanks for the link, Hot Potato. We'll be in west Reading, off the Oxford Road - very close to the Scours Lane allotments, in fact. I'll check out the Caversham group.
