I became aware of this situation a while ago Tim, after reading this book that had been recommended by a friend....

I found it very difficult to identify where some frozen prawns were actually harvested, when you look at the back of packets, there is often more information about where the prawns are packed rather than where they are actually grown. Once farmers have turned their family land over to prawn production the land is ruined for growing due to the salination process as well.

I have been buying my king prawns from Lidl for some time, very good value at £1.99 and they are sea harvested.


If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Shame, isn't it. But actually, if you are truly critical, many varieties of Prawns
have either no taste or a slightly unpleasant taste. It's the crunch - & the appearance - that is the hook.

Even that is further spoilt by bad preparation or cooking.

I stopped eating frozen ones ages ago, they seemed to have lost all their flavour.

We did have some which were fished live out of a tank in Thailand which were delish. They do not eat their food partially decomposed like we do. It dies immediately prior to eating.

We would never eat or drink anything if we really looked hard into production methods.

I often wonder. Is the air safe enough to breathe?

I beg to differ Purple heather, my Thai wife  eats smelly fish from a jar, she tells me it ok if it two year old, it the best, I go in the garage when she is preparing her food as I cannot stand the smell.

They do vary from area to area with their peculiar ideals (same as us)

One story I liked (It is true) was about a chap from a fishing village in the Uk took home his Thai bride.


He brought her home a huge crab, alive, in a big sea water container.

Bless him, he thought she was keeping it as a pet because she kept it in the container and fed it daily.

He returned from his subsequent sea journey  and noticed the crab was still in the container with just one leg.

His wife explained, 'yes, keep meat fresh'.

I did not fancy the caterpillas flies and other delicacies in Chiang Rai Square but the food was fantastic from a lot of other stalls. Chiang Mai, Those dumplings with pork or beans were wonderful. Does your wife know the recipe for the dumplings? It is very like the suet on steak and kidney puddings we have here but pure white.

I would kill for that recipe at 7 baht each they were a real bargain. the guy refused to accept a tip!!
