Just put a slideshow together for my year of veg growing  and my giant onion disaster.

It's amazing how successful you can make a bad year look if you leave out all the disappointing photos.

The camera never lies ........NOT !!..  ;D

Click the SLIDESHOWS link if you want to have a look. :D

What variety of onion do you grow for your shows?

Very impressive I enjoyed that, that gooseberry looked a bit vicious with all those spines on it :o

Did you meet your onion weight target?

Really shows what you can do with a tunnel.

Its got me thinking for next year I have a share in the site communal tunnel where I have an 8ft x 4ft bed, so I should be able to get a couple of dozen onions growing in a space that size if I want to.

No I only managed a 3 pounder after I was ravaged by thrips.

Just bought hundreds of sticky traps for next year so hopefully I might keep them away next time and grow a big 'un. ;D

Some neat photos there.  Did you dig all your plot by hand or do you use a rotovator / cultivator
All you do and all you see is all your life will ever be

Mothy

Thank you for the pics...certainly an inspiration to me for next year!!

Ah well!! there is always next year as they say.

I never weigh or measure my produce nowadays but I did have some good onions this year for a change, could it have been the rain? i.e. keeping the plants well watered, healthy and therefore less susceptible to pests & disease??

Quoteafter I was ravaged by thrips

It has been found that garlic plants placed strategically around the greenhouse are an effective way to repel thrips.

So this might be an idea to get a catch crop and keep your onions clear of pests.

This is my onions this year but not the big ones, I gave them to my grandsons who helped me when sowing the seed.

The first two strings are the balance of my Japanese onions the ones at the back are my maincrop stock.

In otherwards they are in order of eating!!

You couldn't make it up!

I might try planting some Garlic in pots as you suggest as a deterrant.

I find it so strange that some thrips hate Garlic but love Onions... ???

Mother Nature.... ??? ??? ???
