Very broad subject I know, but broadly speaking, when is the best time to buy and plant?

I've cleared a new bed in my front garden which I would like to plant with perennials but think it might be better to wait until spring?

I really think you should decide what perennials you want.  Some can be 'right thugs', ie they will take over any plot, pretty as they may be.

You can plant now and get the plants established before winter sets in.  Its either now or the spring, I plant perennials both times.

Lately I've been attempting to start some with seeds. Sometimes they don't survive the winter out in the open, but it is an interesting process to watch. Last Fall I seeded lupines for the first time. A few survived (out of a whole seed packet) and gave me much excitement in the Spring.

I eould do it in September/October. If you wait until spring you'll be too busy getting your veg started!

Baaaaaaaa

If their shrubby perennials, plant now as caroline7758 says.

If herbaceous perennials, wait until spring as their cheaper.

Thanks everyone.

Just got to do some reading up now. I don't want any that will take over as it's only a small space, but I want varying heights and lots of colour.

Any ideas?

Jo.

Hardy geraniums- there are loads of varieties, they are great for ground cover and you can divide them easily if they get too big.

Dicentra, anemones, sedum spectabile, penstemons....
