Of all the unsuccessful years sowing carrots directly in the ground - I have my first success this year from planting them in containers.  So as yet I have to see the carrot fly.  I am sure he won't miss me out sometime in the future :-\

I read somewhere that you should plant carrots and onions next to each other to help stop the carrot fly... not tried it as  have not had my plot for long and have not got much in it yet....going to try it anyway.

I plant them into plastic drums over 3ft high, also when I pull any I spray with garlic.  It seems to work.  Keeping everything crossed. :D

Planting carrots in between rows of onions really does help to keep carrot fly at bay. They still find them eventually but no where near as bad as when I've grown them away from the onions. And as Tim says, there is no reason why you can't eat most of the carrot even if the little blighters have found them as long as you catch them quickly enough.

Just wondering, would the carrot fly survive in the soil after the crop was gone?
I just had the odd one or 2 that were effected, then I did a second sowing. Had more trouble with the snails using it as a breeding ground.
