Shed is gorgeous innit! The previous occupant even left a few tools - rake, spade and fork - and a couple of rollmats to kneel on. And theres a rusting device that looks like it was last used to spray DDT in the 1930s!

I'm humming and hah-ing about weedkiller. Have bought some but the person who took the other end of the plot sounds 101% organic. And I can't help scaring myself by typing in 'glyphosphate+toxic' into google. If I succumb to laziness I will have to mow a boundary between the plots, put up a windbreak and do the deed under cover of darkness.

Didnt think I'd be able to plant anything this year but the Japanese onions/garlic sound good. Have found some weed-killing plastic on Ebay for about a tenner which should help.

Made me laugh reading the rules about no carpets. A friend was thrown off his hilltop allotment once for doing this -  he carpeted it top to bottom with various floral horrors from skips, and it was visible from miles away. Shame google-earth wasnt around then...

If you're not too far North why not give some French beans a try, providing you like them? The dwarfs are particularly quick to crop.  Sow in small pots somewhere not too hot and transplant when you have a bit of ground clear.  I sowed some a couple of days ago, but I'm close to central London. Have to admit I haven't tried this late before.

PM (private message) me if you'd like some seeds, I've a surplus.
