I have a Magimix food processor, I think its a 5100 (or something), which I find very good for slicing, grating, making pastry.

I also have a Bamix stick blender which I wouldn't be without,  The beauty of it is you have something in a pan that needs blending, ie soup, the Bamix, with the chopper blade, will blend it in the pan, without having to messily transfer it to the processor.

The Bamix has three blade attachments, the aerator, blender and chopper.

The aerator whips, beats mousse, egg-white and whips cream

The Blender is to beat and stir.  Use it for mashed potatoes, mayonnaise, batters and puddings.

Since I bought mine, I have never bought mayonnaise - an egg at room temperature, (which is very important, if it's at all chilled it won't work) 1 teaspoon mustard powder, half a teaspoon of salt, a teaspoon of lemon juice, a teaspoon of white wine vinegar and c. 300ml vegetable oil (I use groundnut).  12seconds on high power, and then move the blender up and down through the mixture.  Delicious mayonnaise in seconds.

The batter for Yorkshire puddings is wonderfully easy, and the resulting puddings are very light and airy.

Obviously, I can't go into very great detail on either.  It's difficult, in some areas their functions cross over, but I wouldn't be without either.

If you want more information about the Bamix go to www.bamixuk.com.

If it is not desperately urgent that you get something, treat yourself to a trip to the Good Food Show at the NEC Birmingham in November, and watch both being demonstrated, and many others as well.

Nice advice.

It all depends, doesn't it? What does one want it fr? Do you already have a Mandolin or a 'Stick Blender'? Or what?

We have had a Magimix 3000 -> 5200 for 20 years - plus a stick blender with mini bowl. But I also use a Mandolin!

And what capacity do you want? We can now do a 1.5kg loaf. and where will you store all the bits & pieces?

I think the problem is that many of the 'functions' overlap.

The Magmix/Bamix is an example  They both do very similar functions, but really, you could do with both.
