Why do the 3rd & 4th trusses start to ripen before the bottom one is half finished? These, of course, are Santa (bottom & 4th) - but the same applies to the beefs & others. = Tim

Hi Tim,
        Ripening fruit gives off a gas called ethylene tomatoes are particularily high  in this..
Could it be that the first truss being the oldest starts to ripen giving off this gas which rises and excites the trusses above to ripen?..
But the fruits  on the bottom truss have to mature naturally
I believe commercial growers use ethylene to excite their fruits to ripen..
only a thought Tim..

What are you complaining for!  At least they are red!!  More than can be said for a nice tomato plantation in sunny Essex.   grrrr

My guess would be that Ten didn't carry her thought far enough. Light becomes heat in a greenhouse. No-one needs me to say where heat accumulates.

I know Tim, I know.  I have been out and put a ripe banana in the greenhouse today, and cut down more of the foliage, and half closed the door, to try and get my HUGE green toms red!  ;D
