looking at chillies for sale in supermarkets for culinary uses some are red and some green, can we use them if they are green off the plant?  ???

Rhubarb Thrasher

try eating one raw off the plant - if it's hot then yes, if it isn't then wait

debster

thank you RT may ask hubby to do that for me lol  :o im a wimp when it comes to chillies

Rhubarb Thrasher

our green ones aren't at all hot, and the blackbird ate the only red one

saddad

Be careful though, the tip often isn't as hot as the shoulders and watch out for the seeds!
;D

Rhubarb Thrasher

Yes be careful, I just tried one of the little green ones on another plant, and hah twubble ih ssshpeakig fo ah bih

debster

lol  :o ;D my biggest mistake ever was giving a chilli to my parrot who love them and cos of the make up of their tongue dont feel the heat, then an hour or so later he gave me a big kiss lesley ash eat your heart out !! :o

Rhubarb Thrasher

apparently that's why they're hot. animals won't touch them, but birds don't feel the heat, so they spread them far and wide in their droppings. The hot one I ate was an Antillais

debster

well they say you learn something new every day, i have all sorts growing even scotch bonnet, ain no way ever on this earth i is ever gonna put one of them anywhere near my mouth  :-X

Robert_Brenchley

Namissa eats those whole. I've never quite been able to cope.

Must have been said before but .............

1. Green Chillies taste green &, usually, not too hot.
2. Red Chillies taste red - warmer & hotter.
3. Seeds? Oh, yes!! Masochist??

PS After that - depends upon whether you want to taste the lovingly prepared food!!

Robert_Brenchley

I don't get the point of taking the seeds out. The whole idea of chillies is to make the food hot; if you remove them, then you just end up adding more of the flesh to get the heat you want.

tim

You well know, Robert,  that you can cripple your taste buds in many ways. And you can buy Chilli seeds for that purpose. But the fruit has a real flavour - and colour. And you admit that you can't munch a chilli - because of the seeds??

I have to admit a semi-disaster. Last year, I had no 'normal' Chillies for my Apple Chutney - bought some Bird's Eye - no idea of how much to use - very hot result, but so small you can't identify them to remove them!!

Oh, well - good for the digestion??

Near the mouth is the least of your worries Debster...  :-X  :-[

i know apparantly my husband did it to his ex wife on honeymoon by accident hes a chef and had cooked her dinner

Barnowl

A lot of the heat is in the pith  :)

By the way I think it is normal to cook green chillies but red ones can be eaten cooked or raw.

The rabbis did say, on divorce, 'Even if she spoils the food.'
