Daughter & cronies are thinking of keeping Chickens on their allotment. They are thinking of re-cycling battery hens.

1. Need more than just weekend attention?

2. Best starter book or web link?

3. Voice of experience??

3. Lots of experience on this site but mine is limited to looking after them part time on farms/smallholdings, too many other commitments to keep them myself.

they need attention at the VERY LEAST once a day to make sure they're in good health and have fresh food and water.  If they can only give them weekend attention then DO NOT get them.  They've suffered enough during their short lives without being neglected further!

Sorry, but that's the truth of the matter.

100% agree!

I think that they should have a minimum of twice daily visits morning and evening.

Anything less and why bother with them if you can't put in the effort?  Just as well to go to Tesco and buy their Free Range Eggs!  They are individuals with characters who flourish with a bit of human interaction!
