Found out today that a lot of local (Norfolk) farmers are having to re-sow peas this year due to bad germination! it's not just me then!! ;D ;D
You couldn't make it up!

nope its not just you. the same things happened to me.about half my peas havent germinated. have to go buy some more tommorow and start again. only thing is i only need about half a packet so am going to end up either throwing some away or trying to save them for next year. are pea seeds any good at keeping?
takes over your life doesn't it

I had the same prob and found putting the peas between two sheets of tissue paper and keeping them wet put my germination up,
As soon as they shooted/shot?, potted them and there away now.

The ones I have sown in cells for an early crop have germinated very well. The remainder I will sow insitu when I plant the cell propagated ones out.

This hopefully will extend my harvest season

I've had that with my sweet peas, but the peas, planted in pots under cover, have been all right, and they're almost ready to be planted out. I still have a packet of Alderman which I'll plant direct shortly, now the soil's warmed up.

Alan Tichmarsh says soak them .No longer than 12 hours.

Just been reading the Victorian kitchen garden,
To avoid mice eating the peas beans and flower bulbs-saturate beforehand with solution of bitter aloes or soak in salad oil and roll in powdered resin.
Place chopped furze in drills where where seeds sown.

That's what the Victorian Gardner's did.

Whats furze?

Furze - dunno ???

I soak my peas and usually pre-germinate them on damp kitchen paper in a tupperware box (I knew that one day I would find a use for all those plastic containers :D)

This time I just didn't get myself organised so made do with the soak.  They have been in the ground a week and today I notice that they have just started to peep thro the soil - it's amazing the difference a few warm days make.

I think furze is the same as gorse - so basically pop spiny plants in the trench t discourage rodents from digging.

Robert_Brenchley

Furze is a local name for gorse. Anything spiky puts the mice off. My father used to use red lead and paraffin but I don't really think that's a good idea!

I sowed a couple of rows of peas (Hurst green shaft) and covered with fleece(£1 shop- 6metresx1.5mtr ! ) and left them for 2weeks, now the sun has been out for a week they have all sprouted. The over wintering row i put in is in full flower and the 2rows direst sown without fleece have been mostly eaten!!

Hurst green shaft, Ne plus ultra and Alderman all 100%. Greensage 40%.  All  sown in the same potting compost at the same timein the same unheated GH.

Robert_Brenchley

Much the same with Purple Podded, Ne Plus Ultra and Magnum Bonum, all started in pots under cover. I didn't check every pea but it must be close to 100%. I planted them out today. Didn't have time to plant Alderman but I'm inclined to start it the same way since it's so successful.
