Well it has not really been the best of days for me.

Some of you know my allotment is owned by a building company and anything could happen when the new town plan comes up in 2011.

Because of this there were few plotholders and the site is half derelict.

I went on a mission to try and rejuvenate the site and I have raised several points with the parish council clerk .

She is great and has now filled up available plots and is trying to get some areas cleared and rubbish removed.

I went down to the plot this evening and found that two trellis that Jim had put up for me had been taken down and moved inwards onto my plot.

They have not been put back properly. My climbing rose had been broken and is now planted well forward to neighbours side.

As you can imagine I was really annoyed but then I thought maybe I have gone over my boundary.Just taken the boundary from obvious division of the plots.I thought maybe new neighbour had been given the measurements and I had not.

However gone over boundary or not surely you just do not move things without consulting me first.

Got home, phoned clerk and no .she had not given this guy any measurements.

She is going to phone him to explain you do not just move your neighbours property.

Si I have this horrible feeling that I am going to have a right dumpling of a neighbour.

Have not met him yet but I know he has been there as signs of digging.

I have phoned the clerk as I want this guy to see I am not going to stand for any nonsense from the start. It has really spoiled it for me as I was looking forward to having a neighbour and I was planing to give him some of my remainders as a welcome to the site pressie.

I have not even met this guy yet.How should I handle it when I do.?

I do not want bad feelings as it is going to spoil it down the plot.

Hopefully just a misunderstanding and it will all settle down Betula.  I know it must really have riled you but hoping for a sorry and a handshake and no more problems once your new neighbour knows the score.  Hopefully, it's not the candidate you didn't vote for!!

People have to start somewhere.

How was this guy to know what was the correct protocol.

If you had been there to show him what was correct in your opinion it might not have happened, or at least you could have debated it.

Gardening has to be learned, you really shouldn't be so quick to judge because of a minor incident.I'm sure with a few of your remainders he'll be a reformed character.

Couldn't disagree with you more albacore.  Correct protocol I would have thought is you don't touch things that don't belong to you or break plants down.

How was betula to know someone had taken the plot next to her?  How could she have been there to meet them?

I agree about giving remainders but I understand how betula must feel as I would feel the same way.

Hope all turns out okay for you betula and you get on really well with your new neighbour.

Uncle Joshua

I had a neighbour move some heavy Yorkshire stone on my plot the other week which while I was moving it back I dropped on my foot, I was very angry but wasn't going to say anything, the next time he came down he didn't see me but started mouthing off about something else on my plot (mine is the best kept on the site) this got my anger back up and I had to explian  what was what to him.

Not what allotmenteering is about but sadly at times needs must.

albacore1854

I was being a bit tongue in cheek.I'd just have it out with the bloke.

Wow, can't believe someone would do that - protocol, etiqeutte or whatever - just common deceny and manners would mean you just don't move something that isn't yours, surely!

I've been on my plot 5 months and I'm still wary of not doing anything to upset the other plot holders.

I think I'd be polite about it until I knew the full facts; there could be a valid explanation I guess, but it seems a very strange thing to do to me
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

albacore1854

I with you most of the way.

However, on occasion need smust. We don't know the layout of the plots, or the circumstances.

Lets say this guy backed a truck in, to deliver a shed, and by accident knocked the trellis over.If he then repaired the damage to the best of his ability,in that instance he was doing his best to be neighbourly.

If he just did it out of spite or stupidity then he's a dumpling as Betula rightly says.

Yes it seemed really odd to me.This is heavy duty trellis and must have taken some shifting. Our plot is top of the hill and really exposed when the winds come so the plan was that it acted as a bit of a wind break.

Also this guys plot is really overgrown and I would have thought all his energies would be needed for clearing it.Not messing round with my trellis.

I know it sounds daft but I bought the rose from an open day at Maxstoke castle. It is privately owned and they only open up for one day of the year and the rose was from their very beautiful gardens.I had a great chat with one of their Gardner's there and it was a sort of memory of a lovely day.
I was training it and it was really looking nice,so that has made me double cross.

Mr Smith

Betula,
I have just been down this same road with my lotty but my problem was that the council gave me the wrong location of my lotty and plot number, what the council should be doing  when they allocate an allotment is go and mark it out and also number it then hopefully we don't have problems :)

Chin up girl!

Hopefully a complete misunderstanding!  I am sure that he/she will be mortified when they realise what they have done!

Sun's out down here - hopefully it is where you are!

Take care

Old Bird!

;)

betula

Thanks everybody, only a small thing compared to many peoples problems

but  as I am sure most of you will understand our lotties are our own little

private space and each little project has taken work and time. :)

Old Bird, I am glad the sun is out for you,it is a bit overcast this end :)

bupster

Probably didn't know the measurements and thought it was on his bit. Just have a word.  :)
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.

Well I met this guy today and I shall title this post Ken and me.

I went to the plot and he was there. He said clerk had phoned him and he said sorry he did not see my rose,He must have very poor eyesight.
Apparently he had my plot previous to me and his old mate ken had the one next door.He said Ken and him had always had a path there and he wanted to do as before. So after a lot of Ken and me I politely pointed out that ,that was then and now is now.I said I would like to be friends but please no touchy my stuff or I will get very cross. He put the trellis back in securely and to my liking and I allowed him his extra bit of space as I can be nice sometimes.
I gave him a little lecture about respecting each others things, felt like a school marm but he agreed with what I said and we left it at that.

He does not seem to bad, only time will tell, wish me luck. :)

springbok

Really pleased you got that sorted, bet your mind is at rest now :)

Mr Smith

When I went down to the lotty today the chap on the next one to me has made a little trench to let HIS rain water run on to my lotty, this weekend a trench will be dug between our allotments, I have not met the chap yet he seems to come at funny times but I can't wait ;)

betula

Yes,why do people do such daft things?

Mr Smith

Our allotments are on a slope and because he is a lazy sod he can't be bothered to dig the trench so I'm going to dig  one ;)
