Never tried this before..

Is it too early to start off the seeds in a tray in the greenhouse? Should I wait until May/June?

I have a packet of the Franchi seeds - "Cabeza Negra 3" - and have looked up red cabbage in "search" - but not much in there..

What do we reckon?

Thanks in anticipation...

I looked this variety up at the website of a Dutch seed seller (www.vreeken.nl).

Cabeza Negra 3 is the darkest of the red cabbages. For planting outdoors you need to sow them March-April, planting out should be with 50 cm in between plants. They need good soil.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all.

Another trip to the greenhouse...

Anything to get away from work!

Hi delpoy

Cabbage is good for stuffing with a mixture of rice, parcely tomatto, onion and minced meat (if you want).  You have to half boil them before stuffing by traping the mixture inside one or part of a leaf.

I found the Kalibos grew really well but kept relatively badly (in the Shed)...
so got some of that and red drumhead for this year.

ours don't get a chance to be stored, sad, I only grow a few at a time and we all love them  ;D

We grew some as part of the POTTAGER SO HAD TWENTY FOUR GOOD SIZED CABBAGE AT THE END OF THE SEASON, yes we ate the others as we went along!

Yes now is a good time to sow the seeds if you have not already done so.
I think they are easier to grow than white.

They are useful for salads too, finely shredded, they add colour and texture.

Very simple to pickle.
Shred, brine overnight, pack into jars top up with cold pickling vinegar. Job done.
