Royal Mail Litter

It occurred to me this morning that the stuff on my doormat is litter. The postman delivered a load of junk mail (no "real post") none of which was addressed to me.

Is there a legal eagle on here who could say what chance I have of taking them to court for chucking litter through my letterbox?!

I know how you feel, we get tons of it and it all ends up in the recycling box... Such a waste!

You could try the Mailing Preference Service (The Mailing Preference Service supports your right to choose the mail you want)

I work in a solicitors office tho I am not a solicitor.  But the Senior Partner had a problem with junk mail for his mother and she was getting loads of it as she had replied to some and they were conning her stupid.  

Well we had the post re-directed to the office for 2 years then the Post Office said that you can't re-direct any longer - so now I collect all his mother's mail and we sort it before she gets it!

There is something called the Mail Preference something which basically you call or write to but we decided it was not worth doing as some of the proper mail would not have got through as well.

The Post Office will tell you that they are obligated to deliver everthing to the address shown on the envelope including junk mail as that is where they make their money.  Not much chance of stopping it tho!

Good luck with it and let us know if you do anything about it how you get on!!!

It was just an idea I had whilst having a Victor Meldrew Moment this morning, but the more I think about it, the more it seems a reasonable idea! Lol

Oh, 'cept that my postie friend keeps puttings things I "might find interesting" through my box....all those deals from PizzaHut and KFC? Bless him! :-\

Yes I get a fair bunch of this litter however when you say Royal Mail Litter I am fed up with my dogs picking up discarded rubber bands from the pavement that have been dropped by the posties. It's not just local for me as when I park up "approx 5 miles from home" and then hot foot it to work I still see these red rubber bands.

It takes a while for the mail preference service to kick in. That is stuff addresed to you. What gets me is all the generic unaddressed stuff that gets pushed through your door. Also the companies that feel free to send you loads of junk mail on the basis that you once bought something from them.

Write on the junk mail  "Not at this address,  Return to sender"   That way, the company still pay a postal bill and get it back in their own mail bag as it has to be returned as Royal Mail is obliged to deliver everything with an address on it ;) ;D ;D ;D   Our junk mail has reduced.  I guess the company takes you off their mailing lists ;)

Under the 'polluter pays' principle of environmental legislation, my preference is to post back  the unaddressed rubbish.  I know that councils recycle paper etc,  but it costs us, the council tax payer, to send the vehicle, sort etc.

If we can all get twenty people to do the same....when the letterboxes are full of the junk mail, then they may get the message.

Do not do this with the addressed stuff.  This is not the 'fault' of the post office, they are legally obliged to post it to you.   Care has to be taken to ensure that Junk mail from Credit card compnies etc do not fall into stray haned, allowing a n undesirable to open a card in your name.  This should be dealt with by the MPS service

ooh - I pick those up.  Will never have to buy and elastic band again - all my seed packets are held together with them ;D

  My sister saw a hedgehog with a red rubber band stuck around it. One day when I get aggravated enough I might kick up some stink about them. I like posties they do an honest job but there's no excuse, it's just mindless waste and litter.
  So stock up now before I start.

As grawrc says, it's the unaddressed junk that gets to me. If it is a personal bit of post, because I once bought something from them, I am ok with it. it's the stack of Everest/Churchill/AA kinda thing I hate. I can amuse myself egging on the conservatory cold phone calls (I live in a first floor flat) but have no choice about what comes through the letterbox.

My right to live unmolested by sales pitches is being infringed! I did the mail preference stuff ages ago, seems to make no difference.

I feel a campaign coming on...

Hands up here - work for a direct mail company!  1) The lists held by our clients are mailed and any returns are deleted from the mailing lists if they come back. You can write on the envelope (do not open it) "unsolicited mail" and it will be returned to the company so they delete it from their list. 2) Some mailing lists are purchased from local election lists (not ours) and if you do not want your address open to the public tell your local government office. 3) Once you have taken out a loan, applied for a credit card of any sort unless you tick the box that says "I do not want my details passed to a third party" your details can be passed on. 4) Door drops by the Royal Mail are only stopped by you applying to your district post office and telling them you do not want door drops.

As a mailing house we pride ourselves on the fact that only the people that want the mailings our clients want to send get them.  :)

A year or so ago, I read about a bloke who returned some junk mail to the company and filled it with some used teabags and a note to say 'you keep sending me your rubbish, so I'm sending you some of mine' and he was apparently removed from the mailing list - I'm not advocating it, but it could be worth a try!....

I collect the red rubber bands too, you get more if you live in the first house in the street.

I used to post the unaddressed leaflets into post boxes, but I can't be bothered any more.

When the junk mail has a return envelope I have in the past...placed a folded piece of paper loaded with glitter and posted it back...Oops what a mess. ;D

  I generally get hearing aid adverts and car thingies. I have selective hearing and I don't drive. One of my postie's always tells me he's got some more tat for me. think he gets just as fed up carrying the stuff around.I chuck it all in the shredder,use it for the chooks nests then put it on the compost.
