I used to put red cardinal polish stuff on my front door step, back in the 70s.  Moved house many times since then.  I am sure you can still buy it at a good old fashioned Ironmongers.  These are few and far between now a days though.  Good luck, keep looking or google it and see where you could buy it.

Think you can get the wax too?

I bought some from our local "old fashioned" ironmongery store, but about 14 years ago. (Haven;t finished it yet, so that shows how often I polish the front step).

Cardinal Red still seems to be widely used on Merseyside, I was there last week and many of the terrace properties going into Liverpool still have steps and around the door finished in what I presume is Cardinal Red :)

One of my jobs as a kid was yellow stoning or white stoning the step,
dont see that anymore

What memories this thread has bought back to the extent to my visit to Yorkshire a few years ago when I walked into a very old fashion drapers, and noticed some Cardinal red polish for front door steps, twenty packs of the old fashion fly traps that hung from the ceilings, a pair of leather football boots with a picture on of Bobby Charlton on when he had hair !!!

Cheers Vony.

We use it on the quarry tiles on the kitchen floor & windowsills.

My neighbour does hers & mine as our doors are next to eachother!

Same as Tim but next Monday the new Landlords are refurbishing my kitchen (hooray) but they are going to put a floor covering down over the quarry tiles. I will still be able to use it on my front porch quarry tiles and the sills in the other rooms. Better start packing all kitchen stuff as they are stripping kitchen out including new ceiling!! ::)

My good old-fashioned Ironmonger told me that Cardinal was no longer available ... but he came up with something called Tableau which seems to be the same stuff.  I've got an old inglenook fireplace with a brick floor, that's where I use it.

Mr Smith

Just had a look on e-bay and there it is 'Tableau' :)
