buckets for tomatoes

One section of our allotment has got loads of really deep bramble roots. We are going to put some paving down, and have a table and chairs, and grow some tomatoes and courgettes in containers. I have seen that people use buckets for some things. Where can I get these from and can I grow tomatoes in them? Cheers

Free black buckits from the Co-op   8)

I cut the bottom off the buckits, so that I can use them for ring culture. I buy a square container from the Pound Shop for....er.....a pound? I fill it with gro-bag compost & 'plant' the ring-culture buckit on top. Plant a tomato/cucumber into this. Water into the square container, feed into the ring. Am sure that a courgette will be fine too, and why not! I think that using the buckit this way, ie inside a square container, not only gives all the requred depth for root growth & water, but also the square is more stable when stuff starts to grow. And they line up more neatly against each other 8)

Yes i do the same alisha, just ask at the shops and they give you the buckets as they only send them for recycling anyway, got more buckets than somerfields in my shed!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I had three lots from Asda last year. The last lot they saved them over a three week period.......I think in the end I had over 100. There are still some in my garage. This year I'm going to use two at a time (one inside the other), drill holes in the planting one, the bottom will have a thick layer of newspaper to soak up the water and the outer bucket will be the reservoir. If it's not enough I intend to put something in the bottom of the outer one to allow for a deeper reservoir. Can only try and see if it will keep them watered enough for longer than one day.  :)

i have another source for buckets and that is any big kitchen, school restaurant etc as they use 5 and 10 and often bigger buckets of mayonaise etc, i am lucky enough to have a hubby to collect them for me as he is a chef but im sure as most kitchens just throw them out they would be glad to donate them  :D
