Whoopee!  Popped up the plot this morning to check everything was okay after the snow, and not only was everything looking great - appear to have lost only one broad bean plant, but my shallots are finally through!  So far a bit patchy, but I shall keep my fingers crossed that gaps will soon be filled!   ;D

Mines are still in the bag and will stay there for at least another 4-6 weeks.

I have bought some Shallots at the weekend. I do not have a clue how to prepare them, prepare the earth, how to plant them, when to plant them.

Can i put them right in when i take the leeks out?

hmm...not adviseable as shallots and leeks are in the same rotation family.

Ahhh, i see.

Can you grow them in manured soil?

Yes,they will love it.  Pop your potatoes in where the leeks have been.

Thanks, Emma, for that - just checked mine again, and they are THROUGH!

So now the next lot will go in tomorrow, since they are just sprouting - they are pink, and only bred by one farmer locally - just got to try them. Then the bought-in ones will hopefully arrive in due course.

And so while the weather's nice, the garlic can go in as well. = Tim

Oh, bt - just dib a shallow hole and put them in up to their neck, about 9" apart. Bring the soil back up to them. Or start them in modules like the experts?

Planted 6 rows of shallots in the lottie yesterday.  An old saying by my Grandad was to set them on the shortest day and lift them on the longest.  I think chance would be a find thing.

OK-it`s time to tell the truth and shame the Devil-I have started my shallots off in trays because the garden is a tip!!(as one member can testify to). And what isn`t still covered in weeds has these huge piles of muck on it-I will get there though :D
