How do I dispose of kitchen knives safely?

This is not related to gardening and hope I have chosen the right section to pose my question. Me and my pals were discussing what would be the best way to dispose of old kitchen knives. I sounded a bit dafty at first but then it got us all thinking................. ???

I suppose you would take them to your local dump and put in the metals recycling facility.
Don't make a special trip though!

Or you could use them as a tool for digging out long rooted weeds.

Are you sure you need to get rid of them? Maybe someone with a good sharpener might like them? Charity shop?!

I would use them at the lottie for cutting veg such as broccoli or beheading brassicas from their root stem.

The local council here collects our recycling refuse fortnightly, and they can be put in with the tin cans, foil, metal etc. For safety, put the sharp ends into the tin cans and then hammer down to trap the blades.

Last year I handed one in at the local police station. Caused a bit of a stir, though. It took them some time to find the correct form!

I'm waiting for the knife amnesty bin, I don't fancy throwing away potential weapons but that's me  ;D

Buy a good steel and keep them!  We've had one ever since we've been married, bought one for son for Christmas, now he and his girlfriend have their own pad and kitchen  :)

Useful thread, as we got another set of free knives from jean-Patrique this week (see Tim's thread a while back) and want to get rid of some old ones. Might try freecycling them to someone with a sharpener (or a knife obsession :o)

I wouldn't have thought knives would be allowed on freecycle.

I am sure charity shops would not take them as lots of them no longer even sell knitting needles. Our recycle bin says tin cans only or glass. Not sure why. I didn't fancy taking them to the tip as leaving them in the metqal bit could be a bit iffy if they got into the wrong hands. I don't want to Freecycle them, you never know, the person picking them up could knife me with them I seem to be inundated with knives, we have cleared out a couple of relatives homes over the past couple of years and we have had freebie sets, some of which look quite lethal. It seems like there are no real answers. I think I will contact the council and see if they can direct me. Thanks for trying. ???
