We've always had rats around- we're surrounded by fields so no surprise, but this one gave me a real shock- about 6" outside the window, cheeky b*****r! It was there again tonight- must climb vertically up the wall or jump about 5ft to get on to the feeder. I suppose I'll have to move the feeder, but don't want to deprive the birds. Is there any kind of feeder that the rats can't get at?

It might well be climbing up the feeder.......I watched a squirrel climb up a smooth tubular steel pole with bird feeder at the top, it was quite amazing. Rats are very good climbers too as you know.

You can get squirrel guards, which are large circular solid rings, they should deter rats as well

I need a couple of these too, its a pity they are so expensive

The feeder is hanging form a hanging basket bracket on the wall. I thought it might be climbing up a big shrub nearby, so when I first saw it I cut this right back, but it still got up. It's either climbimg straight up the wall, or jumping on to the window sill then onto the feeder!Think I moght try hanging it from a thin branch that's not heavy enough for a rat.

We had the rat man on our site the other day. It's nice to have some assistance in getting rid of them!
