Availability of Allotments

Our parish Council has a number of allotments vacant, it seemsw such a shame that these valuable plots are sad and empty. All they need to be productive is a bit of time and effort. Does anyone know how to effectivly publise them?

Do you have a local free paper like the Derby Trader? Or a local "Parish" type mag?

Going in local council paper and parish mag next month, thanks for idea's. I need to get as much publicity as I can. Don't want to loose any plot that can be cultivated as valuable local resource very underused.

Do you have a newsagent/local shop that will allow you to put up a "Poster"

Maybe you could also try magazines like Amateur Gardening, Kitchen Garden and Grow Your Own, which regularly print information on local events and stuff. You could also try other gardening forums. Anyway, good luck and keep up the good work, it's so nice to hear that people out there are still creating new allotment sites while so many are closing!

Thank you. We have gone from 14 to 42 plotholders and 'cos of a JCB and lots of help we now have another 4 plots available. It has been a lot of work but worthwhile as unless the site is used it  becomes more desolate and neglected and then so vulnerable. All looks good on site the local authority have given a lot of advice and are lending two skips to clear flytipping. E'on uk helped with horticulteral  equipment and Hewdens loaned the JCB. Everyone so pleased that site is being restored to its orginal good condition and a way of life preserved and passed on.  Clearly some way to go but looking good and will be on Radio Kent to morrow to try to get message out.

On Fridays, he has a 5-10min slot on his radio show about allotments at 1350hrs. With "Terry from the Rhondda Valley" ;)   Hopefully you will get a mention on there. If you email early enough in the week, you may even be able to telephone on air to mention what you have done and what is available.

Thanks for all advice and have contacted the Jeremy Vine programme so fingers crossed. It seems as though where their are allotments not a lot wanted as people have gardens, and where no gardens also no allotments.
Don't understand why people unwilling to travel a bit out of town to get one. We do have shops and it is only an hour away from London(if you have a car as more difficult by public transport as 3 miles from station and infrequent buses.)
Seems a shame.
Pleased that site now nearly full though and looking so good as well as protected by use for future generations. In this part of the world that is so important.
