Used to be a luxury. Thought that that had changed.

Just weighed up the useable meat on a £7+ 'free range' bird.

512 grams. That's not cheap?? A good Sirloin would be no more.

But you wouldn't get all that lovely stock with Sirloin Tim  ;)
If I ever get it all right - then that's the time to quit.

True!!

And when we buy a few dozen ('free range') wings, the tips go into stock. Great jell.

I've never weighed it like that, but I get 2 meals for the three of us from a free range bird about that price - and we don't eat delicate meals - plus a good soup from the carcass.  Still think it's good value, when you consider our Friday night "chuck it in the oven" pizzas aren't much cheaper.

A delicious free-range chick from our farmers' market costing about £7 feeds three of us two meals, plus two generous lots of scraps for the cats, plus at least 5 pints of fantastic stock. Nothing wasted.

Our last 2 local 'free range' birds have had severe hock burn, so it's organic now for me.

Doesn't sound much tim. I only buy legs these days because a whole bird is impractical for one, but I regularly get between 6 and 8 oz of eating (uncooked) per leg. A local free range leg is 50p, or 40p if I buy five. Then there's the stock from the bones of course.

Much prefer the Thigh!

Do you devil your legs?

euronerd

The thigh is included tim, hence the weight. They're more like quarters. Apart from a couple I keep whole in the freezer, for a quick chicken and chips snack, the rest are boned and frozen in single leg quantities if you know what I mean, for any job that needs chicken meat.

Haven't devilled them for years, thanks for the reminder.

Aha!  See my waffle in Mamta's Kitchen!!

The odd 'sales' line is hers, not mine.

Thanks very much tim. That's tonight sorted out.
