onions

  hi have just come back from lottie checked onions that are hanging, found some starting to go mouldy. was talking to one or two others and they said the same thing is happening, Apparently it is nation wide. there is a write up in Gardeners World. or A mateur Gardener suggest some checking maybe in order

yep, same thing happening to me. I actually thought they'd rot in the ground before I could lift them, but they didn't. But they're not storing either, and the shallots and the red onoins are the worst, when normally they last the longest. A lot of them have a kind of second skin formed a few rings in, and this is where the rot seems to start

I presume that a good ripening was carried out in full sun for a few days?

I guess like many others this year onions have been quite a problem.

OK onions are rotting !! but that is not the only problem I would guess they are suffering from white rot or is it  white rust? (been drinking) meaning the ground that they were grown in is suspect.

So be be careful where you plant your onions next year and for the next few years........avoid this bed!!

for us anyway it's not white rot, which is good I suppose, tho we've still lost most of them. Just one of those years where you're waiting for bad things to happen. Now i'm waiting for the leeks to go to seed

Ive thrown loads of onoins away.

The rotting ones smell like vinegar or something very similar.

Sadly not mine but part of the "Schools Horticultural Centre" on our site that has over 600+ pupil visits P.A..... I'm allowed to sneak things in like the Sweet Potatoes!

I hope the kids appreciate it. I know I would have. I'm was just a bit annoyed with people who've got things better than me. Got a mail from a friend on  Thursday - I'm off to Vienna for the weekend  -can you recommend anything to see? Yes I can - go on the Harry Lime Trail, and spend the weekend down the sewers  ???

It's not white rot - I know what that looks like :( and none of my onions have got it this year - disease free bed.  Some of mine are rotting with this 'false outside' too.  I put it down to the very wet weather that occurred in the run up to harvest.  Some of the old boys on our site said that onions wouldn't keep this year.  Swelled lovely in the wet but then were too wet.

Like you Torquil I checked and found some soft ones and threw them away.  ;D ;D ;D

The thing is did they have neck rot and placed roots down to ripen off an alow the neck rot juices to travel down into the onion.
I always place mine upside down in bread trays to ripen off, but i still get a few go soft.

mine suffered when outside.  I put them upside down to dry in the brick greenhouse, but the few that are left are not great - I have the same inner skin / rot.  They smell awful when they start to go.  We actually bought ( :-[) some onions last week.

Strange, What can it be??? May be SOFT ROT???? I know if that infection is there the onions smell terrible.... But I thought that soft rot only arrives when the tubers were damaged........  are they getting slimy as well ?????
