I never plant anything up for the following year but having read posts on the forun I'm going to start so sweet peas tomorrow (if the wife doesn't drag me off shopping again) but I was wondering what would give me a head start for next year? and is it that much of a head start?

i never grow stuff overwinter, and  it doesnt seem to make a great deal of difference (harvesting wise) from those on the site who do.

Ive done garlic and leeks, only a few onions have germinated. Put some savoys in too, but I have since been told they probably wont come to much as I did them too late. I like to have something in for next year or over winter. Oh still have parsnips as a winter crop.

Japanese onions and Broad Beans are the classics. Make sure the BB's get plenty of Sun... the only year they let us down they were in the shade... rotations!

we've started off sweet peas, they're about  2" high now so are staying in the cold greenhouse, hopefully it won't be as warm as last year so they'll slow grow rather than romp away , it did mean we got early flowers last year  ;D

Yeah forgot about sweet peas, mine are same size as yours manic. I hate not growing anything, but I took rosemary cuttings.....lost the lot in a week :'(
