Leeks- little and large

What is it that makes leeks grow fat or thin? I've got some of the fattest ones I've ever had- about 3" diameter (probably not the tenderest, I'm guesing), in the same bed as some really weedy half-inchers. Just interested to know what makes the difference? ???

It`s the way you talk to them when you put them out, be nice and some grow fat for soup and stews,some stay thin for stir frying or a sautee in butter.

That's ok then- I dug up 3 fat ones today with the intention of making soup!

Seems that I've been doing it all wrong. I thought you dug up the biggest and took it home in the warm while the rest stayed out in the cold and tried a bit harder.

I've planted some closer together in the hope of getting small ones. I don't like them the size of trees like i had last year....however they weren't woody just too much about the size of three good sized supermarket ones!
