As a newbie to sweetcorn growing, can anybody tell when I'm likely to be able to harvest the cobs. I have no idea which variety they are as I received these as small plants

When all the silks on the cobs have turned colour (to brown) peel back the sheath and test the kernels with your thumbnail.. should be creamy rather than watery...
;D

welcome, mr bones..our sweetcorn silks have started turning brown, peeled one back slightly to check, they're at the watery stage now, need a bit more warm  ;D

MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.

Our 'swift' have all been picked and are as sweet as sugar.  Number one son can't get enough.  Glad to say the next lot have cobs but the silks are still silky, so a few weeks yet.

manicscousers

just picked 4 from our new ones, keep finding red ants wandering around the silks and the silks are definitely being eaten by something...do ants eat them ?

saddad

No but molluscs do...
:-X

debster

can you freeze whole corn cobs?

Smileyk

Picked two tonight and ate them - delicious!  ;D

saddad

Yes Debster... wrap them individually in cling film or similar so you can get out the number you need each time!
Can blanch them but we never do anymore..
;D

If find that the mice tell me when the cobs are ready. They eat the sweetest cobs first.
I haven't said this before but I'm going to say it now..I like double digging!
