saddad

No, but it looks lovely... my first guess was one of the red Passifloras but too woody, unless it is growing through a laurel of some kind!
;D

Grandma

It's lovely! Is it a magnolia of some kind?

quizzical1

Is it maybe one of the multitude of Azaleas/Rhododendrons (same family)?
Grow your own and enjoy the fruits of your labours,

How about calycanthus occidentalis (Californian allspice).

According to my RHS A-Z of Garden Plants it is fully frost hardy.

Correct  ;D and yes it is fully frost hardy, and is allways smutherd in flowers, doesn't mind being pruned back hard. I grew mine from seed about 9 years ago from Chiltern seeds. ;D

froglegs, I first came across it when I took a snap of a plant in a garden on Jersey about 20 years ago.  I originally thought it was a magnolia (from the shape of the flowers).  It is a 'little' beaut!!

flowerlady

That's lovely ... does it have a scent ????

Hyacinth

Want one! That's a lovely thing and really earns its keep, doesn't it? Any other colours, btw?

ACE

If yours seeds, I would not mind a few. It is a beautiful plant.

Froglegs

Sorry Ace I've never got any seed from it. :'( i don't think it is self fertile.

Froglegs

Alishka sorry don't know if it comes in different colours

Flowerlady both foliage and flowers have a strong spicy scent which you like(i don't!) or ya don't. :-\  But if its scent ya after at this time of the year let me recommend Clerodendrum Bungei with its deep rose- pink flowers that just fill my garden with a perfume to rival any rose.

Nice if you have plenty of room, I spent a lot of last winter clearing this stuff from a garden as it is a bit of a thug and spreads easily.

So the flowers never turn into actual allspice berries?

If you had cleared as much as I had to, I bet you would. But on reflection the garden I was clearing had suffered from a lot from an inexperienced gardener/handyman for a few years and he had let it get out of hand. The area I cleared was  big enough for a full size croquet lawn.

It's not a game we play in Nottingham, so how big is that then ma duck.
