.................despite caeful sterilisation, we've got it again - in the autumn planted Shallots.

Just praying that the spring planted stuff will be OK. Otherwise, it's never again!! = Tim

Sympathy, Tim. It is a sad thing when you finish up unable to grow something as basic as an onion. And no treatment either!
Gardening is the great leveller.

Mrs Ava

Such a shame Tim.  :(  Are some types of alium more susceptable than others?

tim

Don't know - we've had it in onions, leeks & shallots. These are from the right-hand row, autumn planted. So I'm having to dig up all the soil & dispose of it. The rest were spring planted, so I'm hoping that, for some reason, they may be spared. = Tim

jo2

Forgive my ignorance but what is it? what plague has got these onions?

tim

Shut your eyes - THE WHITE ROT!!
NINE YEARS fallow to clear it. = Tim

kenkew

Lots of work and time for a sad crop. That's tough, Tim. Do you rotate your bed every year? Were they quality sets to start with? If the fungus hasn't yet turned black, your soil may be OK. Hope you burn them.

tim

Yes - I have rotated in the past, but the whole garden is infected now. Maybe I was a little lax in handling the infected ones - didn't realise how easily it spreads.

No - it never goes black - always as in the pic. = Tim

Tim- I know that feeling only too well,no alliums had been grown here for years before I bought the place and it was there waiting to spoil my day. Like you it`s Armillatox or forget it-Golden Bear seems to have some resistance and the Autumn planted Japanese onions are OK- but garlic?-no chance.

Mrs Ava

Bloody hell, tis a worry!!!  We have a touch of everything on our site, clubroot down one end, white rot up at the gate and blight down at the other end!  I have already removed one suspicous bunch of shallots that looked rotten.  The others all look okay...for now...altho the garlic is rustier than a 1970's skoda!  :-\

Yup, I can join you Tim, binned all of my lovely shallots, all yucky and rotten.  Will try plot number 2 next year and see how they get on:'(

Justy

Is this something that is apparent only when you harvest or can you tell before hand?

Mrs Ava

My shallots aren't ready for harvest, but they started to kinda die back and when I looked into the bunch, they were all small and really manky and covered in white like....well...wet tissue I guess you could say....mouldy.  They hadn't developed properly and were quite distorted.  POO!!!!!!! >:(
