My Savoy cabbages (sown in February) are still growing in their seedbed. Hopefully I'll have space to transplant them in a week or two. But I am worried that they are getting too big to transplant (they're about 20 cm high and 15 cm wide). Will they be OK?

I wouldn't worry, dandelion, we transplanted a foot high sprout, I'd got mixed up with my labels, thought it was a greyhound cabbage  ???..it's doing fine, we took as much soil with it as we could and watered it in for a few days... :)

Water well before you move them.

And then, if you believe the old teachings, just pull them up. Sorry Scousers!

Plant DEEP &  FIRM & 'puddle in'.

Thanks for the advice  :)!

I read over on the Beeb that pulling them up damaged the tap root(which ostensibly is needed for the second year)and encouraged a fibrous root system to give better plants for harvesting-might be the reason behind the old lore?

Plant deep and firm for sure.

no problem, Tim, I didn't know that..with it being last july, I was worried about the heat and the roots being damaged..tough old plants, aren't they ?  :)

In a nutshell, Stephan - but if the soil is friable & moist, most of the time it doesn't breakl!!

We just transplanted ours, babies that they are.  They seem to have been in their modules for ages and are still only a few inches high, but they had proper leaves (and I'm sick of seeing them in the back garden) so though it worth the risk.  We'll see I guess  ;D
