Hey Mystic, a vegan chrissy dinner!  :o Nightmare!!  :-/  I have heard so may different veggie type recipes on the telly and radio over the last week or so for veggie peeps who really don't wanna eat nut roasts on the big day.   As vegans I assume dairy is out along with meats, animal fats, fish and so on!  I would roast up lots of yummy veggies like aubergines and courgettes, peppers, toms, garlics, and shallots.  Smother them with good olive oil, loads of salt and pepper, basil leaves maybe, then bung them in a medium kinda oven and bake until they all go soft, all the yummy juices run, and serve with something like couscous, rice, mashed spuds, even roasties I guess, or bread to mop up all the lovely 'gravy'.  Or, I have attached a like to the uk food channels website, and have gone to the vegan section.....maybe something there to titilate?

Hope the link works, and hope Chrimble dinner works!

Hi there,

Just thought I'd join in and tell you about David, my son who is a fruitarian.  He only eats nuts, fruits, pulses and sprouting seeds. He only drinks soya milk, fruit teas, fruit juices and obviously water. No alcohol. No vegetables.

It hasn't exactly done him much harm as he's 6'2" tall and has never had a days illness since he went firstly vegetarian, then vegan, then raw food vegan  and lastly fruitarian.

Everyone thinks that he must be suffering physically in some way because of his diet but just the opposite!
He cycles everywhere (sometimes up to 40 miles in a day - just for the fun of it), attends a gym 3-4 times a week, swims, climbs Munroes etc. He thoroughly enjoys Christmas and he's never a problem to feed.
He can have three or four course meals just like everyone else and it is a real pleasure to grow various fruits in the garden for him and see him relishing them. He does have one vice though VEGAN CHOCOLATE especially the Plamil Chilli bar.

I could ask him for some of his recipes if you like although I won't be seeing him now until Christmas day I'm afraid.

I always thought it would be a good idea if he wrote up a selection of his best dishes and posted them on the web.

Are there any more fruitarians (or vegans) out there who would be interested? He makes anything from soups to desserts also cakes and fun stuff.

Cheers Eileen.

Good advice EJ, sounds yummy and dare I say it, easy (hurrah) - luckily no food poisoning with veggies (have been known to make self ill with iffy chickens many many many times - am impatient person...)

I reckon can put veggies in oven and get peeshed with friends and heat will do the rest..

Couscous is just really really small rice isnt it  ;D

Eileen, I've never met a fruitarian but respect to your son, takes effort to be so diet restricted....makes Vegan trauma sound piffly.

Ta 4 all advice, and have scrumptious dinners one and all

And to Suze_O - thai is fab idea too, got any recipes?  All my Thai stuff recipes have got fish sauce in (ALL of them....) and Vegan types would not be chuffed, as fishes have feelings too (I mean, we know this from Finding Nemo, right?)

Ta muchly nice vegan lady....

My partner is vegan, so for xmas dinner i do his favourite sausageless plait.

1 x pkt Sosmix
1 x sml onion
6 x sml mushrooms
1/2 x pepper
1/4 cup sage & onion stuffing
parsley, sage, mint, thyme
salt & pepper
dash worcestershire sauce (anchovyless) or hendersens relish
dash tabasco sauce
250ml cold water (check packet)
1 x pkt puff pastry

finely chop onions, mushrooms and pepper, mix everything except for puff pastry together.  roll out pastry into a recangle. have pastry long at side and divide into three (do not cut, only as a marker) spread mixture down the middle. on the side make diagonal cuts downwards from edge leaving bout 1½ inches before mixture. start plaiting. bake in oven 220c for about 30 mins or until brown.  this is absolutley delicious. and you cant tell its only pretend sausage meat. Let me know what you think.

Little Gem - that sounds yum.

My mum used to make sausage plaits, which I loved before turning veggie. Now I can make my own!

Where do you get teh sosmix from?
gone to pot :D

littlegem

you can get sosmix from supermarkets and health stores, normally near stuffing mixes and nut roast stuff.
I also recommend 'burgamix'. I add onions, peppers, and a bit of chilli to make chilli burgers, they're scrummy, they have sesame seeds in.  also, if you get a packet of beanfeast you can put extra veggies in and some chilli you get a chilli that is really nice. I think i've mastered all this vegan cooking so if you want anymore recipes, let me know

Stuffed courgettes - stuffed with tomato/courgette/nuts is a hit.

honeybee

Been out and got my sos mix for your recipe, littlegem
I had never heard of sos mix before so we had to have a good old hunt around the supermarket to find it, but OH also known as 'eagle eyes' found it  :)

Will give it a try either this week or next week, i am looking forward to making it, thanks for the recipe :)

littlegem

honybee :)
if you like the plait, try mixing sosmix with onions, peppers, mushrooms, cooked rice, paprika, tabasco, herbs and s&p. rolling into balls, frying them off until brown, then placing them in a home cooked chunky veg pasta sauce for five mins and serving with pasta.  Yummy scrummy

aquilegia

Ooh - that sounds nice Littlegem. Why did I forget when I went shopping yesterday to look for it?
gone to pot :D

honeybee

Oooh thanks littlegem, that sounds good too ;D

Ive decided to make the sausage plait next week to celebrate son number ones return home from his first year at University.

We can have a christmas dinner celebration  :)  :P

littlegem

while ur looking for sosmix, look for 'burgamix' treat it the same as sosmix, adding onions, herbs etc and make tasty burgers, i like them with chilli in, you only need one burger each cos they're really filling. i put in some linseeds aswell just to make sure i get the best out of my food, without too much effort

honeybee

We saw it LG, it was right next to the sos mix  ;D

If i like the sos mix , i will definitely be making the  burgers in the near future  :P

maz
