I have to say, slightly off topic, that I have just had my first raspberry from the plot. (and very yummy it was too) but they are an Autumn variety, is this normal?

Was it on last years wood? If so, then yes, that would be normal.

Our autumn ones are only just showing their flowers.  Last year we were picking raspberries up to the end of November! :P :P :P

My Autumn Bliss rasps do this too (though yours are a week or so ahead of mine). Not a heavy crop, more like getting into practice. Then at the end of summer they go into overdrive.
And yes, this is all on new wood. Freaky and weird, probably, but normal Autumn Bliss behaviour! :D

Hmmm, it wasn't normal behaviour for the 2 or 3 acres of Bliss we had on the fruit farm that I worked on for 5 summers... they were pruned very close to the ground (using the cutter on the back of a tractor), right after harvesting. I never saw a single freaky weirdo... strange... maybe there's something we did differently other than the pruning.

Just a little update - I noticed that my raspberries are starting to get a few flowers!!! So perhaps we will at least get a punnet this year which would be at least an encouragement!!!
