Hello all
Thought I would just post a hello and a quick introduction.
I am the wrong side of 40 married for 23 years with three sons. Live in Kettering Northants. Yesterday we took on our first ever gardening project. (Where we live we have a patio only).
The gardening  project is an allotment masquerading as a jungle :o Don't think anyone has been near it in a decade!

Hoping to be able to get invaluable advice from here and from the wonderful people at the allotment site.

Welcome and Hi, you have come to the right place, eberyone is very friendly and there is a loy of combined knowledge here which is shared freely.

It sounds like you have alot of work ahead of you so take your time and perhaps clear a littl;e patch to pop some thing in now.

Good Luck ,and shall look forward to your posts. Do you have a favourite veggie?

When God blesses you with a multitude of seeds double  the blessing by sharing your  seeds with other folks.

It seems that allotments are only made availble to the public when they are in such a state that the Council couldn't build on them??

Hi saja & welcome to the mad house  ;D

You'll find plenty of helpful & experienced gardeners on here so ask away - no question too big or too small  ;)

Make sure you take plenty of pics as you go along, & share them with us all too!  Good luck x

We are not planning to grow anything  major this year but have hijacked  mother in laws green house that has sat empty and unused for years. Have cucumber tomato and courgette plants grown from seeds in there and lettuce on the patio.

Can't wait to grow brussels as they are the family favourite but guess that will be next year.
Tim yes it seems that way. TBH have no idea how they can call it an allotment:P
Will take a picture next weekend before hubby strims it off and covers it for the summer.

You seem to have the right idea about covering it, but dig the edges of the black plastic or whatever you use in about six inches or you get all sorts of roots just running through underneath, and waiting to cause trouble as soon as you lift it.

Welcome to the mad house... there are quite a few things you can sow up to the end of August... and things like over winter onions and broad beans from Oct onwards...

Hello Saja and welcome,
I'm happy for you with your new allotment venture.
Like Kitten mentioned, there are many very experienced gardeners on here who will advise you what you are still in time to grow at the time of the year and into Autumn and Winter.
I think from what I have read so far is....Don't look at the entire allotment as one big dig. Divide it, (even if only mentally at first) into sections and aim to clear one small section at a time.
Take plenty of pics so when you look back you can see the progress
Most of all.....take things easy and have fun fun fun  ;D

Hi and welcome Saja,

Enjoy your allotment - don't try to do too much in one go, stop and relax and admire your handiwork often.  You will be so proud when you're eating your first veg.

Hello Sajaself

I'm a newbie too and also live in Kettering. I've been and put myself on a waiting list today. Where abouts is your plot?

Happy digging!
